MioPRO2 wants to demonstrate the feasibility of a new generation of human-machine interface to control prosthetic arms. It is based on the development in vitro of 3D muscle tissues, derived from stem cells and connected to peripheral nerves.
MioPRO2 moves from the Targeted Muscle Reinnervation (TMR) and from the more recent Regenerative Peripheral Nerve Interfaces (RPNIs) techniques. MioPRO2 aims to create a new generation of RPNIs made of 3D-printed constructs involving the donor stem cells. In this way theoretically, there is no limit to the miokinetics sources to control the arm. In this framework the Regenerative Lab is in charge to develop the 3D-bioprinted muscles and to design all the stimuli (mechanical, ultrasounds, electrical and fluidic) needed by these muscle to grew-up.
The MioPRO2 project, in collaboration with the “Artificial Hands” area (PI: Prof. Christian Cipriani), aims to demonstrate the feasibility of a new generation of human-machine interface to control prosthetic arms. This approach constitutes novel paradigm that puts in connection the regenerative medicine and the prosthetics research fields.
